Preparation For The New Cook

Recipes are important when you are beginning to learn to cook. After a while, you will start throwing things together the way you want to, but you have to start learning the basics first. Choose your recipe at least a day in advance, read it well and make sure that you have all of the ingredients and tools you need, and make sure you begin give yourself enough time to finish cooking everything before it needs to be served.

Food Hygiene

When cooking, make sure to always wear clean clothes, and use an apron. Always wash your hands before and after working with raw meat and other types of food. Keep your hair pulled back so that you don’t have hair in your food when it’s served, and never prepare food when you are sick or ill. Finally, be sure to wash all meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables before you prepare them.

Frying Foods

If avoidable, do not fry salted or moist products. Fry food is small portions so that the oil stays hot. If you fry foods at too high of heat it will stick to the pan. To avoid this, heat up the oil at a high heat and then you can turn it down to a medium-high heat before putting in the food. To make sure the oil is hot enough, drop a little pinch of flour in the oil; if it dissolves, the oil is hot enough. Finally, if you are going to put anything on with moisture, be prepared for it to begin popping grease up in the air and possibly at you.

Baking

Baking is very important and comes as one of the handy tips for the new cook. Pre-measure all of your ingredients when baking. Time and temperature are always important when doing this as well. Baking can be tricky, so follow the recommendations on the recipe at all times. This is important because over-mixing or under-mixing just a little bit can severely alter how the finished product is supposed to be. You can use cause and effect thinking with other types of cooking, but baking is different. It is hard to predict how changing something will affect the food. It is advisable not to bake two things at once until you are better at the process.

Cooking Pasta

Pasta cooks quickly. Do not cover any pasta dishes because starchy foods tend to make your water boil over when you do this. When cooking pasta, add a little bit of oil to the water (just a cap full) to keep it from sticking together, otherwise you’ll have to keep stirring it. If you let the pasta cook for too long it will be mushy. Stop cooking it and drain it when it is limp but still firm. With all these tips for the new cook, you will surely be at better position once you start cooking.
